Coal Seam Gas (CSG) or Coal Bed Methane (CBM) is a form of natural gas extracted from coal beds. Coal seam gas provides an opportunity to support a world scale LNG industry within Australia. PROCOM has provided 7 years of engineering support to the CSG sector and has practical experiences in dealing with performance issues in CSG plants.

Field Support Services

PROCOM personnel provide operational assurance support in the coal seam gas sector including pre-commissioning, commissioning and operations expertise, training, leadership, day to day planning and monitoring. We are skilled at assessing the safe and optimum performance of an operating plant and providing advice and recommendations to address problem areas. PROCOM personnel can also form part of the site project engineering teams.

Engineering Design Services

PROCOM provides process engineering detailed design services, including but not limited to: hydraulic calculations, pipeline sizing, equipment selection including control valves and pumps, relief valve sizing, hazardous area classification and risk assessments including HAZOP studies. Our engineering team includes both chartered and registered (RPEQ) engineers, with the ability to carry out design projects either internally at PROCOM offices or externally working alongside a client nominated team.

Process Modelling Services

PROCOM uses advanced simulation programs to create steady state and dynamic models that enable CSG companies to better understand and improve all areas of their CSG facility. During the design of gathering systems, modelling of multi-phase flow through pipe networks incorporating land topology is crucial to identify conditions where erosion, vacuum or water hammer may occur. Optimal placement of low point drains and high point vents can dramatically improve pipe network performance and present significant capital and operating cost savings.

Different gathering system designs can be evaluated over the lifetime of the field, allowing operating envelopes and strategies for well completions/isolations to be developed. Dynamic models can be used during both design and operation to address issues such as compressor surging and slugging of liquids within pipelines.

PROCOM has substantial experience modelling CSG facilities including gas separation, gathering systems and compressor stations. Specific modelling experience of PROCOM personnel includes:

  • Steady state multi-phase model of piping network to optimise gathering system design
  • Dynamic modelling of pipelines to optimise pigging schedule and ensure system always operates within design envelope
  • Compressor surge studies for trouble-shooting plant upsets
  • Model validation against plant data for continuous improvement of design

Risk Management Services

The PROCOM risk management team has conducted a number of workshops for clients in the CSG industries. We have been involved in a variety of risk evaluation and mitigation studies, with specific experiences in the following:

  • Risk assessment workshops (HAZOP, PHA, HAZID, HAZAN, SIL)
  • Bowtie diagrams
  • Consequence modelling
  • Hazardous area classification
  • Development of safety cases for major hazard facilities
